Structural context of the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake

[1] A new three-dimensional seismic model and relocated regional seismicity are used to illuminate the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake of December 26, 2004. The earthquake initiated where the incoming Indian Plate lithosphere is warmest and the dip of the WadatiBenioff zone is least steep along the subduction zone extending from the Andaman Trench to the Java Trench. Anomalously high t...

The great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004.

The two largest earthquakes of the past 40 years ruptured a 1600-kilometer-long portion of the fault boundary between the Indo-Australian and southeastern Eurasian plates on 26 December 2004 [seismic moment magnitude (Mw) = 9.1 to 9.3] and 28 March 2005 (Mw = 8.6). The first event generated a tsunami that caused more than 283,000 deaths. Fault slip of up to 15 meters occurred near Banda Aceh, S...

Seismological Aspects of the December 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake

The 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake had an average source duration of about 500 sec. and a rupture length of 1 ,200–1,300 km. The seismic moment, M0, determined with a finite source model, was 6.5 1022 N-m, which corresponds to Mw=9.18. Allowing for the uncertainties in the current M0 determinations, Mw is in the range of 9.1 to 9.3. The tsunami magnitude Mt is 9.1, suggesting that the ov...

Global deformation from the great 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake observed by GPS: Implications for rupture process and global reference frame

Static coseismic offsets >1 mm are observed up to 7800 km away from the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 Dec. 2004 using global GPS network data. We investigate the rupture process based on far-field continuous GPS data. To reduce error in the coseismic offset estimates due to post-seismic deformation in the days following the main shock, we simultaneously fit a model of coand postseismic...

Review of the source characteristics of the Great Sumatra – Andaman Islands earthquake of 2004

The December 26, 2004 Sumatra–Andaman Island earthquake, which ruptured the Sunda Trench subduction zone, is one of the three largest earthquakes to occur since global monitoring began in the 1890s. Its seismic moment was M0 = 1.00 · 10–1.15 · 10 Nm, corresponding to a moment-magnitude of Mw = 9.3. The rupture propagated from south to north, with the southerly part of fault rupturing at a speed...
